Sis and Molly and Me, 1912
Sis and I said, “Molly, good night.
Close your eyes. We’ll turn out
the light.
Slumber sweetly, dearest Molly.
You’re the bestest ever dolly!”
With the photo of this scene
memories get stirred too keen.
Back then life did sure seem jolly
with our bestest ever dolly.
But now my sister’s gone, and so
I wonder where the time did go.
Dwelling is just wasted folly…
Gosh, I miss Sis and our dolly.
Sis and I said, “Molly, good
night.
You’re the bestest ever dolly!”

Notes: To finish out the week, I decided to do one final Kyrielle Sonnet. (Okay - I admit it - I'm kinda hooked on the form.) Anyway, Sepia Saturday provided the prompt for my poem, which is 'dolls.' I wasn't sure where I was going to go with this one, since my parents have most of the old family portraits at their house, but when I found this vintage photograph online, I started thinking about memories, and the rest - well...it just happened.
bestest every dolly, I could repeat this over and over again, makes me feel little again
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed your sonnets. This one is probably the bestest ever!

Very nice. it is funny how these things just evolve.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a very sweet picture.
ReplyDeleteI like the phrase "You’re the bestest ever dolly!” It sounds like something I would say to my cat. I have two cats and both are the "bestest."
ReplyDeleteA bestest photograph and a poem to match.
ReplyDeleteOne of the delights in discovering old photos is to to provide a back story to fit. You have created a most poignant piece of poetry that really takes us back to our own lost past.
ReplyDeleteOh, this almost makes me cry. Beautiful photo, and your sonnet matches it perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Kathy M.
