Erasure

One other thing...Poetry Tow Truck suggested writers try out the erasure feature (as highlighted by Big Tent Poetry) on Wave Poetry.  I did that  - and yes - it was really cool!  The problem was, the poem/writing was created in Flash, which made it very difficult to get a copy of it.  So, with the help of my very computer-literate 11 year old son, I made a screen shot which I saved as a jpeg.  Here's the result, which I called

Gestures and Appearances:

Unlimited Holidays

Hey Gang!  Today's prompts were right up my alley because when I penned my old blog (TheUnseenUndine) one of the things I was into in a big way was weird holidays.  As it happens, today is 'Make Up Your Own Holiday' which is what the March Challenge is all about.  Additionally, Writer's Island's prompt today is 'unlimited' which is, well, pretty unlimited as far as writing a poem is concerned.

So, first, I'm posting a quick (and rather tongue in cheek) 'unlimited' poem, followed by three holiday poems.  The holiday poems are, in order of appearance, 1.) real 2.) bad and not real and 3.) fun and not real (but maybe should be.)

“All I want is a warm bed and a kind word and unlimited power.” ~Ashleigh Brilliant

I don’t ask for much
but if I had to pick one,
power works for me.

Cherry Blossom Day

Today is the National Festival of the Cherry Blossom.
Isn’t that awesome?

###

National Paper Cut Day

We celebrate this day not with parades
but rather (OUCH!) with Band Aids.

###

The First Annual Push Pin Celebration

Today marks the holiday creation
called the Push Pin Celebration.
It’s a day where we reward
those things stuck in your bulletin board.
Have a picture, card or saying?
Use the push pin for displaying
all those things with deeper meaning.
Tack ‘em up for easy screening.
Prettier than plain thumb tacks;
fill your board up to the max!
But bear in mind when pinning goals
these pins will leave some tiny holes.
Nonetheless, the fest begins -
let’s celebrate those great push pins!

There's No Uniformity To This Post

Prompts today are

1.) One Stop Poetry.  This site is definitely in a New York State of Mind.  I ♥ New York!

2.) The March Challenge.  Pancakes were first flipped today, so breakfast is on the menu there.  Yum!

3.) Big Tent Poetry.  The idea is to take an earlier work of one's own and do something 'different' with it, using a tool from their fun list of Poetry Toys.  I used my poem 'Little Willie #1', put it through BabelFish (translated to Japanese) and then re-translated it back to English.  And if you want to learn more about Little Willie poems, check this out.

Okay...ready?  Here we go...

Little Willie #1

Little Willie said, "Bless you,"
when he served Nell toxic glue.
Nell got sick and died with haste.
Shoulda stuck to white school paste

Uniform

Poets United Thursday Think Tank presented the folks-who-write with the word 'uniform.'  Please check out this site to find links to some amazing poems and stories  - because while the subject may be about uniforms, their words are anything but...

Uniform

Encased in talent like a uniform,/The rank of every poet is well known;/They can amaze us like a thunderstorm,/Or die so young, or live for years alone. ~-W. H. Auden, 'The Novelist'.

Hearts worn like a badge,
we pour them onto the page
uniformly worn.

And while I'm on the subject, if you can, please send some good thoughts - that those who wear the uniforms in far away places come home safe and very soon.

Thaumaturgy...

...is Magic!

"A Thaum is the basic unit of magical strength. It has been universally established as the amount of magic needed to create one small white pigeon or three normal sized billiard balls. The thaum, hitherto believed to be the smallest possible particle of magic, was successfully demonstrated to be made up of /resons/ (Lit.: 'Thing-ies') or reality fragments. Currently research indicates that each reson is itself made up of a combination of at least five 'flavours', known as 'up', 'down', 'sideways', 'sex appeal' and 'peppermint'." ~Terry Prachett

For today, The March Challenge (in honor of Houdini's birthday) wants writers to reflect on 'magic.'  Theme Thursday's prompt is 'paper.'

As writers and poets, we are true thaumaturges because we can make magic happen: with a bit of mental legerdemain, along with some pen and paper (or keyboard) prestidigitation, we create pigeons and billiard balls out of whole cloth, and somehow manage to pull word-rabbits out of hats, too.  (And smell like peppermint in the process!)

“I think I did pretty well, considering I started out with nothing but a bunch of blank paper.” ~Steve Martin

“There is something magical in seeing what you can do, what texture and tone and colour you can produce merely with a pen point and a bottle of ink.” ~Ida Rentoul Outhwaite

I can do magic.
From a blank piece of paper
I made a poem.

A Toast...

...for toast.  Yep, today is 'Toast Day.'  And in honor of that crunchy, yeasty holiday...

The March Challenge wants writers to reflect on 'bread.'  A toast to bread!

Three Word Wednesday supplied the words, 'volley, dual and identical.'  Here's to random words!

Finally, We Write Poems provided a picture prompt, as created by Australian street artist Rone.  Raise a glass to street art!

Oh yeah - and one more toast:  Cheers to you, my friends, who drop by to read my work, write nice comments and in general, make me feel pretty toasty!

If reality
tastes like bread, a bit of jam
spreads the illusion.
