Unlimited Holidays

Hey Gang!  Today's prompts were right up my alley because when I penned my old blog (TheUnseenUndine) one of the things I was into in a big way was weird holidays.  As it happens, today is 'Make Up Your Own Holiday' which is what the March Challenge is all about.  Additionally, Writer's Island's prompt today is 'unlimited' which is, well, pretty unlimited as far as writing a poem is concerned.

So, first, I'm posting a quick (and rather tongue in cheek) 'unlimited' poem, followed by three holiday poems.  The holiday poems are, in order of appearance, 1.) real 2.) bad and not real and 3.) fun and not real (but maybe should be.)

Unlimited

“All I want is a warm bed and a kind word and unlimited power.” ~Ashleigh Brilliant

I don’t ask for much
but if I had to pick one,
power works for me.

Cherry Blossom Day

Today is the National Festival of the Cherry Blossom.
Isn’t that awesome?

###

National Paper Cut Day

We celebrate this day not with parades
but rather (OUCH!) with Band Aids.

###

The First Annual Push Pin Celebration

Today marks the holiday creation
called the Push Pin Celebration.
It’s a day where we reward
those things stuck in your bulletin board.
Have a picture, card or saying?
Use the push pin for displaying
all those things with deeper meaning.
Tack ‘em up for easy screening.
Prettier than plain thumb tacks;
fill your board up to the max!
But bear in mind when pinning goals
these pins will leave some tiny holes.
Nonetheless, the fest begins -
let’s celebrate those great push pins!

Hazy Holidays

Yeah, I know I did the holiday thing a few days ago, but Big Tent Poetry wants to see holiday-ish (or anti-holiday-ish) writings for today.  What’s a girl to do?

Add to that the fact that SiS/Few Miles gave the hazy, crazy prompt of ‘haze,’ and you can see where this is all going.  Or maybe not, since it really is a bit hazy right now, but anyway...

So, first, I'm posting some more 5/7/5 Haiku poems (see stuff below) and then afterward, I’m gonna check out all the nice comments I’ve gotten in the last couple of days, which I haven’t been able to do due to a hectic schedule and other stuff (am I being too hazy about this?) – and then I'll do the return visit thing, too.  But in the meantime...

Haze Affirmation

The sky is filled with stars; invisible by day. ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

If I look beyond
the haze of the commonplace
I can see the stars.

Now let’s tackle the holidays.  I checked my sources (see Holiday post) for weird celebrations.  Since this is the start of a weekend, I decided to list holidays for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which means you're gonna get a 5/7/5 Haiku for each of the three days. Wow.  Just.  Wow.

Friday the 25th

Pistol Patent Day (Samuel Colt)
Go Bowling Day
Renoir was born today in 1841

If Renoir painted
bowling balls, alleys would have
striking impressions.

###

Saturday the 26th

Open that Bottle Night
International Sword Swallowers Day
Carnival Day
Tell a Fairy Tale Day
Ring Finger Day
For Pete’s Sake Day
National Pistachio Day
American Birkenbeider Race (according to Birkie, it’s a mondo crazy race for outdoor fitness enthusiasts)

 Sunday the 27th

Polar Bear Day
Flip a Pancake Day
No Brainer Day
Longfellow was born today in 1807 (and now you know why I used the quote in the Haze Haiku)

It’s Polar Bear Day
and if you mess with this bear
it’s No Brainer Day.

Have a nice weekend...and celebrate!

Holidays as such...

Before I get into the prompt poeming today, I thought I'd share with you some celebratory tidbits:  Did you know that today, February 16th, is

Do a Grouch a Favor Day
Pistachio Nut Day
The nylon stocking was patented today in 1937
Independence Day for Lithuania
National Almond Day
911 Birthday (it was started today in 1968)

And in case you're interested, among others festivals, yesterday was National Gum Drop Day.

There are a lot of cool websites out there which can give you a reason to celebrate seven days a week, 365 (or 366, if a leap year) days a year!  Here are a few:  Bizarre American Holidays, HiDates (not active officially anymore, but you can access some pages), Holiday Insights, ButlerWebs, Holidays, Holidays for Every Day and BrownieLocks.

Now, you might be asking yourself - why?  For what purpose would all this weirdness be listed here?

Well, that brings me to prompt #1.  Three Word Wednesday gave a prompt today of the words, "blink, kind and occasion."  And in using 'occasion' - as in, one of the holidays listed above - I got my poem idea.  The form is Huitain.

Do a Grouch a Favor Day

What kind of occasion is this?
It’s ‘Do a Grouch a Favor’ Day?
Huh?!  I’d much rather reminisce
about the fete from yesterday:
‘National Gum Drop Day.’  I say,
I wouldn’t blink twice for a sweet!
Gum Drops have a certain cache,
but grouches are just not a treat.

Continuing on with holidays, We Write Poems wanted us to write a Valentine to ourselves.  Mine is an Envelope Quintain.

Funny Valentine

My funny Valentine to me
would have jokes and of course, some puns…
really silly stuff, by the tons.
No schmaltzy,  mushy overruns:
for my heart, laughs are the key.

And finally, SiS/Few Miles provided a picture prompt, which practically cries out, "Mother's Day!" in clay.  My 5/7/5 haiku is actually a nice one (meaning, not silly or funny) because it's a tribute to my mom, who totally rocks.

Mom Wish

I hope I can be,
to my kids, the kind of mom
my mom is to me.

Have a happy day - whatever you choose to celebrate!
