Holidays as such...

Before I get into the prompt poeming today, I thought I'd share with you some celebratory tidbits:  Did you know that today, February 16th, is

Do a Grouch a Favor Day
Pistachio Nut Day
The nylon stocking was patented today in 1937
Independence Day for Lithuania
National Almond Day
911 Birthday (it was started today in 1968)

And in case you're interested, among others festivals, yesterday was National Gum Drop Day.

There are a lot of cool websites out there which can give you a reason to celebrate seven days a week, 365 (or 366, if a leap year) days a year!  Here are a few:  Bizarre American Holidays, HiDates (not active officially anymore, but you can access some pages), Holiday Insights, ButlerWebs, Holidays, Holidays for Every Day and BrownieLocks.

Now, you might be asking yourself - why?  For what purpose would all this weirdness be listed here?

Well, that brings me to prompt #1.  Three Word Wednesday gave a prompt today of the words, "blink, kind and occasion."  And in using 'occasion' - as in, one of the holidays listed above - I got my poem idea.  The form is Huitain.

Do a Grouch a Favor Day

What kind of occasion is this?
It’s ‘Do a Grouch a Favor’ Day?
Huh?!  I’d much rather reminisce
about the fete from yesterday:
‘National Gum Drop Day.’  I say,
I wouldn’t blink twice for a sweet!
Gum Drops have a certain cache,
but grouches are just not a treat.

Continuing on with holidays, We Write Poems wanted us to write a Valentine to ourselves.  Mine is an Envelope Quintain.

Funny Valentine

My funny Valentine to me
would have jokes and of course, some puns…
really silly stuff, by the tons.
No schmaltzy,  mushy overruns:
for my heart, laughs are the key.

And finally, SiS/Few Miles provided a picture prompt, which practically cries out, "Mother's Day!" in clay.  My 5/7/5 haiku is actually a nice one (meaning, not silly or funny) because it's a tribute to my mom, who totally rocks.

Mom Wish

I hope I can be,
to my kids, the kind of mom
my mom is to me.

Have a happy day - whatever you choose to celebrate!
