Tuscan Thursday (On Friday)

Old Postcard

The view at dusk
of the Tuscan
hills.  Musky notes
like dreams float by
and I think of summer wine...just you and I.

Note:  The form is Ya Du.  The poem was inspired by the above artwork as the prompt from Theme Thursday.

The Day of the W - Works of Art, Woodworkings and Wordles...

...and it's not even Wednesday.

But anyway ~

Hello!  Today is a wonderful day, isn't it?  Well, I think so, but that's because (drum roll, please) 1.) there's no snow and ice in the forecast today, 2.) I've had the pleasure of reading a number of really great poems already today and...3.) today is my birthday!

I think I'll celebrate by posting some poems.  Okay...I do that pretty much every day, but still...

First, for the 4th day of the Haiku-a-Thon, I'm using the artwork prompt thoughtfully provided by SIS/Few Miles.

let’s trail Old Burro
down the red clay path to home
he will know the way

Second, Big Tent Poetry, being equally thoughtful, provided a Wordle (a collection of words culled from another source) for today's winsome poeming.  Out of the twelve words shown for this Wordle, I chose five and wrote a triple limerick.

Danger ~ Woodwork Alert

There once was a cabinet maker
who was more of a cabinet faker.
He attempted to build
but he wasn’t too skilled
so his chests looked just like hell’s half acre.

He could never remember which blade
he should use on the lathe when he made
his doorknobs and handles -
it looked more like vandals
had been in his shop on a raid.

He said, “It’s a matter of function,
with woodworking,” but in conjunction
with each new disaster
he called for the pastor
for sacrament of extreme unction.

Thanks for stopping by.  I hope you have a wonderful day, too.

...and you thought the red carpet was the only place to find the glamour...

...Big Tent Poetry gave a really fun prompt for this week.

The idea was to use a not-taken-by-you (the writer, that is) portrait, of which you either have the rights or is part of public domain - and then write about it from the artist/photographer point of view.  The picture I decided to use is in the public domain, but since I found it at the FunDraw.com website, I'm giving a link back to them.

Now, as soon as I saw one particular picture, I have to say. I was seriously inspired. And guess what?  The inspiration was to write a Villanelle. Yup.

And that, in turn, led me to think of Dylan Thomas.

Do Not Go Gentle Onto That Good Beach

Do not go gentle onto that good beach,
at least, not in that costume which you wear;
Fashion is merely a figure of speech.

As I’m your closest friend, I must beseech
you – please do not parade in that - not there.
Do not go gentle onto that good beach.

Jersey Shore’s no place for your Jersey peach.
(Sigh.) There’s just one way to make you aware:
Fashion is merely a figure of speech.

So I guess I should practice what I preach
and photograph you in your swim suit flair.
Do not go gentle onto that good beach.

When you see my snap, I hope it will teach
you a lesson re this trendy affair.
Fashion is merely a figure of speech.

Whilst I shoot you, like a Greek chorus, each
sand and sun worshipper does thus declare,
“Do not go gentle onto that good beach!
Fashion is merely a figure of speech.”

The Ladies Who Skate, 1905

I absolutely love old photographs. There's something fascinating about looking at a moment that's been captured in time, especially from a very time long ago.

Tess Kincaid contributed this snapshot, which was taken in 1905.  It is a picture of her great aunt with two friends, as they were on their way to go ice skating.  It's the prompt for the week at Magpie Tales.

Here is my Roundel:

The Ladies Who Skate, 1905

Bundled up tight, they posed before the rink.
Hans Brinker would have loved to see this sight.
With my modern view of fashion, I think…
bundled up tight.

The ladies who skate did find such delight
while circling the ice.  Their cheeks rosy pink,
they carved elegant figure eights, despite

those long woolen coats which trailed on the rink.
No one complained – it would not be polite.
Afterwards, they’d sit and sip a hot drink
bundled up tight.

...and in the 'Why do one when you can do two' department...

...I was just having too much fun.

So with regard to Poets United Think Tank Thursday, I also found this picture at DeviantArt, which I thought was way adorable.  And with that, I went to RhymeZone (my favorite online rhyming dictionary, which also has a whole lotta other great word-things, too!) and decided to see what I might discover which could work for Wendi.

Yep, she's quite a girl!

Meet Wendi

Hi!  My name is Wendi.
My accessories? Mostly Fendi.
I stuff that’s trendy
'cause that's my modus vivendi.

In a Sea of Blue

I really love this work of art!  It just seems so upbeat and so full of joy and freedom.  Poets United Thursday Think Tank gave a prompt which involved visiting DeviantArt (a wonderful site for artists, writers and poets) and randomly choosing and then using one piece of art there to inspire a poem.

No greater pleasure
exists than to be soaring
as if one had wings.
