...by the light of the moon...

if I had a string
long enough, I’d hold on tight
and fly with the moon

to catch a moonbeam
takes imagination and
a lasso of dreams

Notes:  The form is 5/7/5 Haiku.  Poets United Think Tank Thursday's prompt is 'moon.'

It all begins with 're'...

the search continues
because it has to, and I
reinvent myself

###

Notes: The form is 5/7/5 Haiku.  The words were inspired by Poets United Thursday Think Tank's prompt of 'rebirth' and Theme Thursday's prompt of 'reaction.'  I'm not sure whether I actually reinvent myself or merely adapt to my environment, but regardless, when change occurs, there is often a part of myself that emerges that is wholly unexpected.

Shoe Tales

"...your feet…so petite…
Madame, just push...a bit more…
Ugh!  Okay…they’re on."

A Vamp for a Princess

“I think this shoe should fit you well,”
the Prince said to dear Cinderel-
la.  But when he slid on the shoe,
he knew not what he’d got into.

“Dear Prince, your buoyant mood I’ll quell.
You think that shoe should fit me well?”
the young girl asked, with nostrils flared.
Her red lips parted.  Fangs were bared.

The Prince jumped back. He was surprised.
“I guess the shoe thing’s ill-advised?
I thought the shoe would fit you well.
It seems you’re under – what? – a spell?”

“I’d say,” sneered Cin, “so please don’t tamp-
er with my heart.  C’mon – a vamp? –
that’s for a vampire?  Your blood smell,
unlike that shoe, should feed me well.”

Notes:  Sorry for the long absence.  I've actually written some poetry this month, but it didn't end up getting posted here for a variety of reasons.  I've also been working on some short fiction, on Flashy Fiction, which is a prompt blog I co-host with several other terrific writers and poets - and I've been tweaking my middle grade, historical novel too.  (More on that another time.)

Anyway, Sepia Saturday, one of my favorite prompt sites, provided the theme of shoes, along with the topmost picture for their weekly prompt.  I wrote the 5/7/5 haiku for that picture, but then another idea crept (not crypt, by the way...groan!) into my head.  I loved the idea of a 'vamp' being in a poem with...a vampire.  After all, a vamp, according to one definition, is a part of a shoe.  It's also a piece of improvised music, as well as a tempting lady.  The form is Quatern.

Block Party

on an old scarred desk
an IBM Selectric
gathers words and dust

###

Notes: The above picture was thoughtfully provided for by Magpie Tales, for the prompt this week.  The theme of Writer's Block is obvious, as is my choice of form (5/7/5 Haiku) but I decided to write a slightly different take on it.  Instead, my idea of a block at the moment is watching my kids (in crazy costumes, of course) go 'round the block in search of candy.

Happy Halloween!
Boo!

Drive By

I don’t have to look
through the rear-view mirror to
know where my past is

###

Notes: Magpie Tales posted the above photograph (Lee Friedlander, from America by Car) as this week's prompt.  What added to the idea of this particular poem was another prompt provided by Imunuri, who said to write about, "...a place you loved as a child."

This does not look at all like the neighborhood where I grew up, (N.E. Philadelphia, in case you might be wondering) but I liked the idea of NOT looking in the rear-view mirror.  Why?  Because I'll always know where I came from anyway, and I like the idea of that memory.

The form, obviously, is 5/7/5 Haiku.

You Are Here

Image courtesy of ArtSlant/'You are Here' by Priscilla Franco-Asturias

You are here because
if you are not, you must be
in some other place.

###
Notes:  Sunday Scribblings' prompt today is 'You are here.'  The form is 5/7/5 haiku.

And if you are not here, then where are you?  Just wondering'...

Minute Music Metaphor.

  Fast Fable

Thus, in haiku-speak,
allegro allegories
mean prompt parables.

###

Note:  Laurie Harris Kolp is a contributor at Imaginary Garden with Real Toads.  She provided the prompt for today's poeming, with the word 'allegro.'  However, there was a small catch to the prompt:  in addition to using the word 'allegro' which means quick or brief, poets can pen no more than eight lines to the single stanza (an octave) of our poems, and we have to write it in under a minute.  Give it a try - it's really challenging and fun!

I am what I am...

Showstopper

"Penny Trait’s my name,”
mumbled the drag queen.  “And yes,
I am what I am.”

###
Notes:  Three Word Wednesday's three prompt words today are drag, penetrate and mumble.  One of my favorite shows ever is La Cage Aux Folles.  I was actually lucky enough to see it way back when, when it was at the original Palace Theatre in NYC.  I've seen it several times since then.

Because of the prompt words, this 5/7/5 haiku practically 'Broadway-belted' itself at me to sing...errrrrm...write it.
